About the Video
In 2006, the NSW AMES (Adult Migrant English Service) approached Local Noise with the idea of making a DVD for its young (mostly refugee) students: something that would engage them in the classroom, as well as showing them the way in which people have used hip-hop as a vehicle for self expression, identity and language learning. There is an established connection between hip-hop and the process of finding a cultured space for migrants and refugees on the margins of mainstream Australian society, a connection represented in the similar aims of Local Noise and AMES.
Over the course of 2006, the crew shot studio sessions and live gigs with involved artists. In post-production, the emphasis of the project shifted towards the making of video clips that would be available on a new refugee youth website hosted by AMES: Nexus Project. The concept behind the Nexus Project is one of learning in context, a web space that sees the significance of culture and networks in learning, as part of an active participation in the world.
These video clips, which will also be featured on the Nexus Project website, are edited according to themes that were most relevant to the students of AMES and refugee youth in general. The themes of the video clips include language; hip-hop and traditional culture; hip-hop and contemporary Australia; hip-hop, self expression and identity; workshops, community and education.
There are also video clips which introduce the artists involved in the project: Wire MC, Morganics, MC Trey, Maya Jupiter, Mr Zux, Peacefender, Munkimuk, Lez Beckett, Jakalene Extreme, Josie Styles, DJ Amy, Azmarino.
